Do Not Disturb & iOS Game Recommendation

Hi Everybody

We’ve had a couple of people recently that have thought their iPhone was suffering from a problem, and were on the point of getting new devices because of it. Not that we want to stop people getting new toys of course, but it turned out that they were all suffering the same ‘problem’.

Did you know there was a Do Not Disturb mode on your iPhone in iOS? And that it’s very easy to mistakenly turn it on?

When Do Not Disturb is set, your phone will typically not ring or notify you of anything except for calls from people in your Favourites list. So if you are missing calls, or people are saying that they are getting put straight through to voicemail, check to see if DND is set. You’ll know if it is, because there will be a little crescent/moon shape in the top bar of your screen in between the time and the battery indicator. Chances are that you’ve turned it on by mistake! When you pull up from the bottom of the screen you will be taken into control centre (where you can turn on things like Airplane mode and wifi). One of the buttons (looks like a crescent/moon) will turn Do Not Disturb on or off (grey off, white on).

If that doesn’t solve your problem , feel free to give us a call on 01923 555048 and we’ll do our best to help or advise you who at Apple to speak to.

I also wanted to mention a new game that I’ve found for iOS which is amazingly addictive, and it isn’t Flappy Bird! It’s a really simple numbers game that requires no arithmetic, just a bit of thought and practice. […]

Is Your Business “Important Enough” ?

Today I was reading an article from The Telegraph online where they talked about what your email address says about you (read it here)

And it made me think about something I’ve said over and over again to independent trade people, small businesses, consultants and photographers: “if you’re using a free email address (hotmail, outlook, btinternet, gmail etc), what message are you sending your potential clients?” In my view, a business that has an email address of companyname@gmail.com is not professional enough for my custom. After all, many of these companies or partnerships have a Web site already (so they ‘have’ the domain), yet they stopped short of using that domain for email. I realise that this may be gobbledygook to a lot of people, but that’s why we’re here.

It really doesn’t take a lot of effort to configure a domain for email (or a Web site if you haven’t got that far yet), so why undersell yourself and look like a business that thinks they aren’t important enough?

CHNO Technology will happily discuss your requirements for domain names, email addresses and even Web sites. Give us a call on 01923 555048 for advice on this, or get in touch electronically by email, our contact page or the social media links at the top left.

ToughTech Duo Case Study

Over the past few months we’ve been working hard with CRU, a Vancouver, Washington based company to bring focus to their products aimed at the photography/video market here in the UK. CRU products have been long favoured in the US by leading photographers such as Jared Platt and Joe DiMaggio, but today we’re publishing our first case study based on input from one of the UK’s leading sports photographers, Richard Pelham, Chief Sports Photographer at The Sun Newspaper in London. Late last year, I was lucky to be introduced to Richard as he was looking for some help with some storage issues he was having, and from there we have been working together on his long term review of CRU’s ToughTech Duo.

For those that don’t know Richard’s work, he’s responsible for some of the most iconic sports photographs from the last few decades, and has been voted Sports Photographer of the year four times. Looking through his portfolio is like a pictorial reminder of the last 30 years of UK sport, he’s been to and photographed virtually everything of interest to the British sports fan.

Please take a read through Richard’s case study, and if you need further information, please do get in touch! As CRU’s photo/video reseller here in the UK, we are now selling the ToughTech Duo (and other enclosures to be added soon) through our online store.

Who’s going to the SWPP convention?

Morning Folks

Today we’ll be making final plans for attending the Society of Wedding and Portrait Professionals seminar in London on Saturday. We’re going along to promote CRU’s storage products with Jared Platt on his workshop on Lightroom 5 Workflow. For those that attend, there will be special pricing available after the show.

I’m pretty excited to see this as I’ve heard a lot about Jared and it promises to be very interesting so I’d encourage any photographers out there to think about coming along. There’s plenty of other workshops going on over the next couple of days on business and technique. Definitely worth a visit even just for the trade show.

The products Jared recommends that photographers use for storing their data are from CRU Dataport, and CHNO are focused on these products in the UK. We’re currently working with the manufacturer on a plan to get more exposure in 2014, and hope to be able to release further information on this very soon.

To start with we’ve had a review model on trial for several months with a multi-award-winning sports photographer who now absolutely loves his Toughtech Duo, and we should have a report from him that we can publish soon.

That’s all for today, need to get on with final preparations for the weekend now.

Have a good day,

Chris

TTT: Time Machine (a.k.a. One click automatic backups)

Morning All

As I mentioned yesterday, I’ve seen so many people recently who don’t back up, and didn’t realise how simple it is to do. It’s much easier to show you how easy the procedure of setting up Time Machine is, so that’s what I’ll do today.

If you need help in selecting a suitable backup drive, please get in touch through any of the usual methods (social media links top left of screen, via the contact page or the comments below).

There are a few little points I wanted to put across though:

Use as big a hard drive as you can find for your backups. TM keeps history of hourly backups in the last 24 hours, daily backups for the previous month and weekly backups until your drive is out of space, at which point it will delete your oldest weekly backup. SO the more space you have on your backup drive, the more historical backups you will be able to keep. e.g. if you are running a machine with 500GB of data, a 500GB external drive will only keep the latest copy of everything. Increase the size and you will have sufficient room to store some history.
If you are using an external drive for backups, use as long a lead as possible and put the drive away somewhere safely. If the worst were to happen, and your house or office is broken tom thieves generally will go for what they perceive as the valuable items. If your backup drive is sitting next to your computer there’s a chance they;ll take that too. Put the drive in a less obvious place and you at least stand a chance of having a recoverable copy of all your data.
