Monday Catchup 13/1/2014

Morning all

Welcome to 2014! A little late, but we’re back on track now.

I’ve seen so many people recently who don’t back up, and didn’t realise how simple it is to do. It’s much easier to show you how easy the procedure of setting up Time Machine is, so that’s what we’ve done and we’ll be posting that tomorrow.

Later in the week, we’re looking forward to attending the Society of Wedding & Portrait Photographer’s annual event in London where we’ll be in attendance with Jared Platt to represent CRU-Dataport whose storage devices we recommend. For those who may be interested in coming along, there will be some special offers for attendees of Jared’s classes as well as a giveaway. More details on the convention and ticket information can be found here .

As always, I’d like to encourage you to subscribe to our social media streams, the links should be in the top left of the page and please pass on our details to any fellow-minded folks, potential clients or suppliers who may be interested in our musings. And don’t forget about our Flipboard magazine which can be found here.

Thanks for reading, speak tomorrow

Chris

PFF: TextExpander

Friday again, which means it’s time for another Product Feature.

This week I’ve done a short video about a product called TextExpander, another utility that gets used all the time to the point where I almost forgot I purchased it! Without further ado, here it is:

In the video, I mentioned a couple of links. The app store links is below, and the link for the free upgrade to v4 is here.

I’ll be back for one last message this year on Monday. Until then, have a great weekend!

Mac Pro Available

Well, this morning I have good news……….Finally, after a long wait in the UK and Europe, we have a new model Mac Pro available to order!

The new model is a radical change to the stereotypical desktop computer, as you’d expect only from Apple, disposing of (entirely) the last bastions of 90’s technology  (spinning hard drives)and moving into late 2013. Now, this new model is not going to appeal to everyone (that is for sure), but for the seriously power-hungry, these machines are going to be the way forward. Realistically I’m expecting 3D artists, video folks and scientists to want the new Pro, but of course there’ll be the few Mac fans with a lot of spare money who ‘just have to have one’ (and with funds available, why not?).

Starting at £2,499 (rising to nearly £8,000 for the real high end, and that’s without important stuff like a monitor….), will you be my first client to be transferred to one?

One final thought for today – following on from my post the other day, I was reminded of a recent job where a client was being harassed by an ex-employee over matters they shouldn’t have known anything about. Turns out that they were monitoring their employer’s email! Additionally, most services with financial information allow you to reset their passwords by them emailing you a link. If someone knows, or guesses, your passwords, imagine how easy it is for them to do this and delete the evidence. If this resulted in credit or debit card fraud, you may also find it difficult to reclaim any money stolen. So, bear that in mind when you set simple passwords for email. Change them today if there’s any danger anyone […]

In A Rush!

Morning All

Another early Wednesday for me, the last one of 2013, for my regular breakfast networking meeting. I’m heading out real soon, so today’s gonna be a short one I’m afraid!

There’s just a couple of things I wanted to highlight today.
1. Flipboard
I wanted to remind you of my recent video on Flipboard (see below), and that I have my own magazine now which you can view by clicking here. Feel free to subscribe; its updated a couple of times per day with any news items or blog posts that I think you may find interesting. As always, feedback would be great through the usual social media pages (links available at the top left), email or the contact page.

2. iBooks Gifting
I noticed yesterday that Apple have finally enabled you to “gift” books within iBooks, so you can buy someone a copy of an e-Book (for iOS and Mac now) for Christmas if you wanted. I’ve hardly bought a paper based book since I got my first iPad and I much prefer reading this way now. If you or a loved one do too, give them, or yourself, a gifted book for Christmas!
3. Speaking of Christmas
There’s still time to get your gadgets in for loved ones! I put together a short list of six of my favourote suggestions for the tech lover in your life – read more here.

That’s all for this morning; got to run! Have a great day, and I’ll be back tomorrow with something new.

Password Safety

Welcome to another Techie Tip Tuesday

I started to record this weeks tip as a video, but as I was doing it, I realised that the content really wasn’t suitable! So I’ve reverted to text for this week alone.

Today I wanted to talk a bit about passwords. Once we’re done, you’ll know why you should use different passwords on all your accounts, how to make your passwords difficult to guess and decrypt and I’ll also give you some ideas on how to make sure you never forget your login information no matter how random your passwords are!

Over the past couple of years there’s been a noticeable increase in the amount of companies that have admitted that their web sites have been compromised and account details stolen. Companies like LinkedIn, Adobe, Sony, Twitter, Facebook, to name a few of the most famous, have all been hacked at some point. Now with some of these companies, you will understand immediately why it becomes a huge issue; they’ve got your credit card details attached to your account.

But what about the other Web sites? Lets say you have an account on a hobby related Forum. Surely on your average forum there’ll be nothing of value?

Think about how much information you might reveal to a few fellow photographers, football supporters, Mums or whatever social group you’re connected with. There’s a whole new “art” these days for bad guys to use what is known as social engineering to find out enough information about you to get access to your money, or to commit identity fraud. If you’re part of any networks its almost impossible to prevent this, but being conscious of your security will reduce the risks.

Here’s another thought…… what if […]
