In A Rush!

Morning All

Another early Wednesday for me, the last one of 2013, for my regular breakfast networking meeting. I’m heading out real soon, so today’s gonna be a short one I’m afraid!

There’s just a couple of things I wanted to highlight today.
1. Flipboard
I wanted to remind you of my recent video on Flipboard (see below), and that I have my own magazine now which you can view by clicking here. Feel free to subscribe; its updated a couple of times per day with any news items or blog posts that I think you may find interesting. As always, feedback would be great through the usual social media pages (links available at the top left), email or the contact page.

2. iBooks Gifting
I noticed yesterday that Apple have finally enabled you to “gift” books within iBooks, so you can buy someone a copy of an e-Book (for iOS and Mac now) for Christmas if you wanted. I’ve hardly bought a paper based book since I got my first iPad and I much prefer reading this way now. If you or a loved one do too, give them, or yourself, a gifted book for Christmas!
3. Speaking of Christmas
There’s still time to get your gadgets in for loved ones! I put together a short list of six of my favourote suggestions for the tech lover in your life – read more here.

That’s all for this morning; got to run! Have a great day, and I’ll be back tomorrow with something new.

Password Safety

Welcome to another Techie Tip Tuesday

I started to record this weeks tip as a video, but as I was doing it, I realised that the content really wasn’t suitable! So I’ve reverted to text for this week alone.

Today I wanted to talk a bit about passwords. Once we’re done, you’ll know why you should use different passwords on all your accounts, how to make your passwords difficult to guess and decrypt and I’ll also give you some ideas on how to make sure you never forget your login information no matter how random your passwords are!

Over the past couple of years there’s been a noticeable increase in the amount of companies that have admitted that their web sites have been compromised and account details stolen. Companies like LinkedIn, Adobe, Sony, Twitter, Facebook, to name a few of the most famous, have all been hacked at some point. Now with some of these companies, you will understand immediately why it becomes a huge issue; they’ve got your credit card details attached to your account.

But what about the other Web sites? Lets say you have an account on a hobby related Forum. Surely on your average forum there’ll be nothing of value?

Think about how much information you might reveal to a few fellow photographers, football supporters, Mums or whatever social group you’re connected with. There’s a whole new “art” these days for bad guys to use what is known as social engineering to find out enough information about you to get access to your money, or to commit identity fraud. If you’re part of any networks its almost impossible to prevent this, but being conscious of your security will reduce the risks.

Here’s another thought…… what if […]

Monday Catchup 16/12/13

So, here we go, the last full week before Christmas! Just a few short notes today to keep you up to date with things.

I thought I’d let you know today that I’ll be taking a break from the regular blog schedule from next Monday, and will only put occasional stuff out over the Christmas and New Year break. I’ll resume the normal schedule from Monday 13th January, but there will definitely be some days when there’s something I feel the need to tell you! I’m going to try to use the break to get ahead of the schedule for the future, certainly in terms of the Tuesday and Friday posts, as it’s been tough getting things out on time while continuing to support our clients.

Following on from the Product Feature Friday post a few weeks ago, I’ve been putting together our own Flipboard magazine. If you’d like to follow this, you should be able to find it by searching for ‘CHNO News’ in Flipboard (sorry the title’s not that imaginative!). I’ll continue to add to this most days as I find articles that I think might be of interest to Mac users, photographers and others with a general interest in technology. Please do let me know how you find the content, or make suggestions if there’s an area where you think I might be missing content.

We’ve got another tech tip coming up tomorrow (this time on password safety), and a product feature on Friday as per the schedule. The feedback so far has been very good, and I’d really like for you to share these videos with as many people as possible so that I can get as many people following the company on […]

We Need Your Help!

Good morning all

As you’ve probably noticed, our new schedule for blog posts means that we’re hoping to get two videos out each week. One of these will be a product recommendation (software/hardware/service), the other will be a tip of some form.

The products we can handle, but we want to make the tips as relevant as possible. So that’s where we need your help. We’d like to give solutions to real problems that people encounter, or questions that need answering rather than things we think you might want! So, please, if you have any suggestions, drop us a line via email, Twitter, Google+, Facebook, in the comments below or via the contact us page.

Of course, feedback is also really welcome, as it helps guide us in the right direction.

Thanks for your help in advance. Must dash as it;s my regular networking morning today, but I’ll be back tomorrow with some ideas for tech gifts for Christmas.

17 More Sleeps :)

Morning all and welcome to another new week! Hope everybody had a fantastic weekend and is looking forward to the week ahead.

I spent Saturday in London visiting Winter Wonderland with family. It’s a great day out if you’ve never been before, the only negative things I can say abou it is that (although its free to get in) it’s a bloomin’ expensive day out (£5 a pint for a beer, £7.50 for pie and chips, and £6 per person on a roller coaster), and also I’d recommend not going at the weekend. Saturday was ridiculously busy, verging on the dangerously overcrowded possibly, and it took a little of the pleasure away for us. But, still, a great day was had by all.

Our trip to Hyde Park seems to have become a bit of family thing to start the Christmas spirit going, and this year, more than since I was a child, I’m really looking forward to the festive season. With a burgeoning small business, my free time is much less than ever, but my happiness is much greater and that’s what really counts.

For those of you following us on Twitter, you may have seen the blog post from CultOfMac that I tweeted over the weekend regarding iBeacon. It’s well worth a read, because I think, no hope, that it may turn out to be a big thing in 2014 from Apple, and could be another game changer.

Finally this morning, I’m working on a post for later this week about tech gifts for Christmas this year. I’ve got my own ideas about what I’d like to give/receive……but what about you? If you have any great ideas, please send them to me at info@chno.co.uk, or leave them […]
